Mr. David Miller is the director of the theatre department at Zeeland High Schools. Mr.Miller has been an educator for 20+ years.  He holds a BS in Secondary Education, a Masters in Theatre, and a MFA in Production Design.  He is frequent scenic and lighting designer for Grand Rapids Circle Theatre, Actors Theatre Grand Rapids, and GRCC. 

DRAMA 1

Drama I concentrates on acting theory and practice in an Actor’s Studio format. Play analysis, character analysis, and script analysis/script scoring are completed. Students work on warm-up techniques, as well as voice and movement theory and exercises. Performance scenes include full troupe scenes, duo scenes, monologue scenes, and audition scenes/monologues. There is not direct connection or requirement for students to be involved in the extracurricular Zeeland High Players troupe.

DRAMA 2

Prerequisite: Drama 1

Drama II allows students to work on all the aspects learned in Drama I, but on a deeper and more advanced level. As in Drama I, this course is set up in an Actor’s Studio format, meaning that many scenes and critiques occur during the semester. Advanced acting theory, dialect study, advanced movement, and voice technique are covered. The course works on a troupe basis, with actors assigned to many different troupes and scenes. Each student, in addition will direct at least one scene in the semester. There is one outside performance required. There is, however, no direct connection or requirement for students to be involved in the extracurricular Zeeland High Players troupe.

TECHNICAL THEATRE AND DESIGN

Students in this course will have a hands-on introduction to the technical and design world of theatre. Course content will cover set design, costume design, lighting design and projection design along with the technical requirements needed to implement the covered design areas. As part of the class requirement, students will learn through experience by participating as crew for approved events and activities that take place in the school’s theatre. Some class hours will be scheduled outside of the normal school day.
